UASU warns Kenya Kwanza over university reforms as Wesonga threatens shutdown

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Mbadi presented university reform proposals to the National Assembly Education Committee on Thursday. His recommendations featured administrative restructuring, cost reduction measures, and outsourcing strategies for public institutions. The plan also called for satellite campus rationalization and asset disposal to address financial obligations. The Education Ministry's collaboration would guide comprehensive reform development under these suggestions. Universities would benefit from streamlined operations through these proposed changes.

UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wesonga rejected the reform package and blamed the Kenya Kwanza government for undermining academic communities. The union leader threatened September semester disruptions unless authorities release outstanding HELB funds and scholarships. Government debt to universities reaches Sh21 billion according to union calculations. Wesonga warned against mobilizing young people through university networks if demands remain unmet. Academic staff face Sh2.73 billion in unpaid 2023 salaries while institutions struggle with severe understaffing issues.
