Kenya marks Mazingira Day with nationwide fruit tree planting and clean-up drive

Kenya will celebrate this year's Mazingira Day on October 10 with a nationwide fruit tree planting and clean-up drive, aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and restoring ecosystems. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry is urging citizens to plant fruit trees and clean their surroundings, with this year's theme focusing on "Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship."

Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa highlighted the importance of personal responsibility in environmental protection and lauded the media's role in mobilizing the public. She emphasized that Mazingira Day is more than just planting trees; it is about fostering a culture of care and reconnecting with nature.

President William Ruto will lead the national event, planting fruit trees and participating in clean-up activities in his former primary school. Each school is expected to plant at least 2,000 fruit trees, with students taking seedlings home to expand the initiative in their communities. The National Youth Service will provide subsidized seedlings at a cost of Sh150 each.

Barasa also announced the finalization of the Forest Conservation and Management Bill 2025, aimed at strengthening forest resource laws and attracting private investment. The initiative supports food security, ecosystem restoration, and youth empowerment through job creation.
