Kenya Railways Assesses SGR Impact for Naivasha Kisumu Link

Kenya Railways has hired experts to study how a new train line from Naivasha to Kisumu might affect people and nature. These specialists will talk with locals about possible problems and find ways to address them before construction starts.

Engineer Tobias Otieno from Kenya Railways visited Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang Nyong'o recently. He explained they had already marked the entire 262-kilometer route for Phase 2B of the Standard Gauge Railway. Teams have begun mapping out which areas need attention through a Resettlement Action Plan study.

Kenya Railways has stepped up preparation work for this major project. The new train line aims to transform travel across western Kenya by connecting Kisumu directly to Nairobi and other business centers. Otieno mentioned that the railway would eventually link Naivasha to Malaba and Kampala and then extend to South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and Congo.

Governor Nyong'o strongly supports the railway plan. He believes it will make transportation easier and create many jobs throughout the region. The project includes building both a new lake port in Kisumu and a special railway branch that connects directly to this port, improving the connection between Mombasa and Kisumu.

The environmental team will look at how construction might impact local wildlife, plant life, nearby communities, and existing roads or buildings. Their research will help planners make smart decisions about the railway path and construction methods to protect nature and help local people.

After completion, the railway extension should greatly improve both cargo shipping and passenger travel. Local businesses should grow faster, more tourists will visit, and western Kenya will connect better with neighboring countries. Farmers and factory owners across western Kenya should benefit as the project helps the entire country reach its economic goals.
