Kenya Rolls Out Immunisation Drive for Typhoid, Measles

Kenya's health officials launched a massive vaccination drive across the nation this month. The campaign runs from July 5 through July 14 and targets millions of kids. Young children will receive shots to fight deadly typhoid and dangerous measles outbreaks. Health Minister Aden Duale announced the emergency program after disease cases spiked nationwide. Medical teams will visit schools and communities to reach every child possible.

Drug-resistant typhoid has become a serious killer among Kenyan children under 15 years old. The disease spreads faster due to climate problems and crowded cities. Kids under five face the highest death rates from this dangerous infection. Traditional medicines no longer work against these tough typhoid germs. Vaccination remains the only reliable way to stop the disease from spreading further.

Measles has already hit 18 counties hard since early 2024. Official reports show 2,949 children caught the disease and 18 died from complications. Many parents skipped their child's second measles shot at 18 months old. This left thousands of kids vulnerable to the highly contagious virus. Health workers blame poor vaccine coverage for the current outbreak.

The government wants 95 percent of children vaccinated against measles and rubella. Officials also aim for 80 percent coverage with the new typhoid shots. County health teams will work with religious leaders and community groups to spread the word. Parents must bring their children to vaccination sites during the campaign period. Medical experts stress that no child should die from diseases that vaccines can easily prevent.
