Government Secures 5.6 Million Bags of Subsidized Fertilizer.
NAIROBI, Kenya - The government has obtained 5.6 million bags of subsidized fertilizer. Farmers can access it through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura announced this on Wednesday. He said it is part of preparations for the upcoming rainy season.
The goal is to make farm inputs more affordable. This will boost agricultural productivity and food security across Kenya.
"The government has secured this fertilizer for the long rains," Mwaura said. "It will be available to farmers via NCPB."
A seed and seedling program is also being launched. It will help farmers grow high-yield crops.
Mwaura said government efforts to improve the economy are working. Investing in agriculture has been a top priority.
When President William Ruto took office, food imports had jumped from 10% to 17%, making Kenya vulnerable to global food supply shocks.
"We had to prioritize agriculture under the BETA plan," Mwaura explained.
Kenyans spend 54% of their household budget on food. The government is working to lower food prices.
In 2022, Kenya imported 10 billion shillings worth of maize. The country is maize sufficient, which saves foreign exchange.
Kenya has ample stockpiles of maize and sugar. The prices of staple foods have been falling.
