Kenya's Inflation Rises to 3.0% Amid Holiday Travel Surge

December saw more Kenyans traveling to visit family for the holidays. This caused a jump in transportation prices. Bus fares on some routes went up by as much as 50 percent.

At the same time, certain foods cost more, too. The price of maize flour rose between 2 and 7 percent. Electricity bills also increased slightly for many households.

These price hikes pushed Kenya's overall inflation rate to 3 percent in December. That's up from 2.8 percent in November, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

Not everything became more expensive, though. Some fruits and vegetables got cheaper. Mangoes, potatoes, and cabbages all cost less in December. The prices of diesel, petrol, and kerosene fell as well.

The end of the year is often a time of higher prices in Kenya. Kenyans have come to expect these seasonal swings. The government tracks the changes closely to understand how they affect the economy and people's lives.
