Kevin Kachapin defends Charlene Ruto in Nairobi court as ruling delayed

Nairobi attorney Kevin Kachapin appeared before the court Wednesday defending President William Ruto's daughter Charlene against identity theft charges. The lawyer, whose father Simon Kachapin serves as West Pokot Governor, represented the complainant in proceedings against Webstar Ochora Elijah. Authorities accused Elijah of falsely assuming Charlene Ruto's identity while operating through Zawadi Publishers on May 22, 2025. The defendant allegedly published a unauthorized book titled Beyond the Name Charlene Ruto and the Youth Uprising. Court proceedings centered on whether to dismiss the case due to Charlene's absence from testimony.

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested Elijah under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act for unauthorized identity use. The accused received bond terms of Sh100,000 with alternative cash bail set at Sh50,000 after defense arguments regarding flight risk. Defense attorneys contend the charges represent political interference and constitute free speech violations. The court postponed its decision until July 28, 2025. Legal teams await the ruling on case dismissal grounds.
