The franchise operator behind KFC and Pizza Hut locations across Jamaica has committed $18 million toward disaster recovery after Hurricane Melissa devastated the island as a Category 5 system. Restaurants of Jamaica will channel financial resources to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management's official relief account and Food for the Poor Jamaica, which has been distributing emergency provisions throughout affected regions.
Company officials plan to deliver direct aid through the KFC Harvest Outreach Programme to multiple facilities, such as Salvation Army Corps locations in St. James, Westmoreland, and Trelawny, along with Manning's Boys Home and St. Matthew's Mother's Union in St. Elizabeth. Additional support will reach Hanbury Home for Children, Windsor Lodge Children's Home, and Friends in Need in Manchester. Several elementary schools damaged during Hurricane Beryl in 2024 and struck again by Melissa will receive assistance, among them Mayfield Primary and Infant School and Top Hill Primary School in St. Elizabeth.
Managing Director Mark Myers said the business has launched internal programs to help affected staff members and will continue distributing meals and supplies during the coming weeks. Myers described the storm as among the most destructive weather systems in Jamaican history.
