Yum weighs future of Pizza Hut

Yum Brands has initiated a strategic review that could result in divesting Pizza Hut, acknowledging the chain's struggles to maintain relevance in contemporary markets. Chief Executive Chris Turner indicated that despite internal efforts to reverse declining performance, the pizza franchise might achieve greater success under different ownership.

The restaurant operates 20,000 establishments spanning more than 100 nations, with international revenues climbing 2 percent annually and Chinese operations remaining particularly robust. Domestic results tell a different story, as American sales contracted 7 percent during the initial nine months of 2025 while market position eroded from 19.4 percent in 2019 to 15.5 percent currently. The traditional dine-in format has struggled against delivery-focused competitors, with challenges compounded by a major franchisee bankruptcy in 2020 that eliminated 300 locations.

Parent company Yum Brands has not established a timeline for completing the evaluation, though its other properties, including KFC and Taco Bell, continue driving overall revenue growth of 8 percent.
