Khairy fires back I didn’t leave Umno, I was expelled

Former Malaysian lawmaker Khairy Jamaluddin rejected claims he departed Umno willingly, reminding critics he faced expulsion from the political organization nearly three years ago. The ex-Rembau representative responded sharply on Monday to Sabah Barisan Nasional leader Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who cautioned against members joining only to exit again. Khairy wrote that party officials removed him and warned against distorting past events.

His statement arrives as observers anticipate his potential comeback before state elections in Sabah. Party officials dismissed him in January 2023 for reportedly violating internal rules around the 15th general election. Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed earlier on Monday that Khairy signaled interest in membership but has not filed paperwork.

The former health minister avoided directly addressing speculation about his plans but requested understanding, indicating he would provide clarification within several weeks. Reports suggest senior leadership has approved his possible return ahead of the upcoming regional polls.
