Kipchoge Keino Wins Defamation Case Against Nation Media, Awarded Sh4.5 Million

Athletic legend Kipchoge Keino just scored a major victory against Nation Media Group. A Nairobi court handed him 4.5 million shillings after the newspaper wrongly painted him as a criminal. The 2018 story claimed the Olympic champion was hiding from police over missing Rio Olympics money. Reporters said he had vanished and was dodging authorities who wanted to arrest him. The article made readers think Keino had stolen public funds and run away.

The truth tells a different story about what really happened back then. Keino was actually in Mexico collecting an award for Kenya's disabled sports team. He had nothing to do with the missing money and never signed any financial documents. Police investigators cleared his name completely after checking all the facts. The prosecution dropped every single charge against the running icon.

Magistrate Rawlings Musiega called the newspaper story false and mean-spirited. The court said journalists failed to check their facts before printing lies about Keino. Nation Media Group said sorry later but refused to pay any money to the athlete. Their lawyers claimed the story helped the public learn about corruption. The judge rejected this excuse and ordered them to pay up.

The media company can still fight the ruling if they want to appeal. They have thirty days to challenge the court decision before paying anything. Keino's lawyer celebrated outside court and said justice finally came through for his famous client.
