KMPDC probes Nairobi hospital for detaining child over Sh3M bill

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council initiated formal proceedings against an Eastleigh private hospital after reports emerged of child confinement over outstanding medical expenses. The regulatory body expressed alarm at the facility's actions, which allegedly violated professional healthcare standards. Chief Executive Officer Dr David Kariuki condemned the practice as completely inappropriate and damaging to Kenya's medical system integrity. Council officials arranged the patient's immediate relocation to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for continued treatment. The organization collaborates with government agencies to ensure legal consequences for responsible parties.

Healthcare providers nationwide received guidance to enhance patient safety protocols and prioritize ethical treatment approaches. The detained minor should have received care at Kenyatta National Hospital but arrived at the private institution through administrative error. Medical expenses totaling three million shillings exceeded the family's financial capacity. Patient detention for unpaid bills occurs frequently across Kenya despite constitutional prohibitions. Articles 28 and 29 guarantee personal freedom and human dignity protection under Kenyan law.
