Koech, Bernett discuss UK's plans for Kenya

Belgut MP Nelson Koech met with Acting British High Commissioner Dr. Ed Bernett on Tuesday to discuss the Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership signed in July by President William Ruto and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The committee chairman said Parliament would provide oversight for the five-year agreement covering security, trade, and green growth initiatives between the two nations. Koech emphasized the Security Compact's role in addressing cybersecurity threats, irregular migration, and financial crimes affecting regional stability.

The lawmaker confirmed support for the Defence Cooperation Agreement, which permits UK military training in Kenya, but stressed that implementation must align with parliamentary recommendations that protect national sovereignty. Both officials discussed expanding cooperation in renewable energy, environmental conservation, and improving the healthcare system. Koech expressed confidence that strengthened bilateral relations would deliver tangible benefits to citizens in both countries. The next review meeting is scheduled for Oct. 21.
