Korea to test new defenders at home EAFF football championship

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo plans to give fresh faces a chance on defense during the upcoming regional tournament. The team faces China, Hong Kong and Japan at the East Asian Football Federation Championship starting Monday. Hong selected 26 players for the squad with 23 coming from domestic league K League 1. The tournament takes place at Yongin Mireu Stadium about 40 kilometers south of Seoul. All three Korean matches will happen at the same venue.

Hong sees this competition as perfect timing to test new talent before the World Cup arrives next year. Five defenders on the roster have never played for the senior national team before. The coach wants to see how these young players perform under pressure against regional rivals. He believes the tournament offers a great chance to evaluate defensive combinations thoroughly. Testing different lineups could help Korea prepare for bigger challenges ahead.

Park Jin-seob leads the defense at age 29 with six international appearances. The veteran defender serves as vice captain for this tournament. Park tells his teammates they must make the most of this opportunity to impress coaches. The team aims to win every game and claim the championship trophy. Young defenders know strong performances could earn them spots on the World Cup team.

The tournament does not appear on FIFA official calendar dates. Clubs had no requirement to release players for international duty during this window. Korea had to rely heavily on domestic league talent to fill roster spots.
