KRA Waives Sh158B in Tax Penalties for 2.9M Kenyans

KRA has canceled Sh158 billion in tax penalties through its amnesty program launched last December. The program helped nearly 3 million taxpayers clean their records as of April 9. The tax authority collected Sh10.9 billion in main tax payments since the program started. Taxpayers can clear their records through the program, which waives penalties for tax debts built up before 2024. The initiative runs until June 30.

KRA wants to help people fix past tax problems. The program aims to encourage voluntary payment. Taxpayers who owe no main taxes but have penalties qualify for automatic relief without applying. Those who still owe main taxes must apply online with a payment plan to clear everything by June. Debts from January 2024 onward remain fully payable.

The tax authority asks people with ongoing disputes to use the Alternative Dispute Resolution system for quick solutions. KRA urges all eligible taxpayers to use the amnesty before it ends. The program offers a fresh start for those struggling with old tax obligations.
