Last of Us Finale Flops as Fans Tune Out

The Last of Us Season 2 finale lost many viewers compared to the first season on HBO. Season one attracted 8.2 million American viewers despite competing with the Oscars ceremony broadcast. The recent season finale drew only 3.7 million viewers, according to The Wrap reports. This represents a 55 percent decline from the previous season finale numbers. HBO officials expect viewership numbers to grow as more people watch the episode later.

The network reminds fans that over 90 million people worldwide have watched the series episodes. Season two averaged nearly 37 million global viewers per episode across all platforms. Many fans suspect that the death of a major character in The Last of Us Part II video game caused viewer disappointment. The controversial storyline may have driven away longtime series followers. HBO renewed the show for a third season despite the viewership decline.

Series co-creator Craig Mazin promises Season 3 will focus more heavily on character Abby. He explains that Joel's actions continue to influence all storylines moving forward. The story will center on various characters, including Ellie and Dina, as well as Abby herself. Video game creator Neil Druckmann recently discussed potential plans for The Last of Us Part III. He stated that Naughty Dog needs a compelling story before creating another game installment.
