Vinit Agarwal ditches Naughty Dog to build Last of Us Online's ghost

Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us Online after extensive development, disappointing fans who enjoyed the original Factions multiplayer mode. Former game director Vinit Agarwal departed the studio after witnessing the project's termination following a decade-long tenure. Agarwal had recognized opportunities to merge the company's cinematic storytelling expertise with competitive multiplayer experiences. His portfolio at Naughty Dog encompassed boss battle design for major titles like Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part II. He specialized in creating artificial intelligence encounters that mimicked human player behavior.

Agarwal established an international development studio with former Naughty Dog creative director Joe Pettinati. Pettinati operates from the United States while Agarwal manages operations from Japan. Their unnamed company develops what Agarwal terms a triple-indie multiplayer game that emphasizes cinematic action elements. The project remains in early development stages with partners already engaged. The developers aim to deliver the multiplayer experience that Factions enthusiasts anticipated before the official cancellation.
