Lawyers Ask ECOWAS to Sanction Tinubu

Nigerian lawyers want the ECOWAS Court to punish President Tinubu for declaring emergency rule in Rivers State. These legal experts also seek action against National Assembly leaders who approved this decision. ALDRAP members claim Tinubu broke regional laws when he suspended Governor Fubara. The president announced these measures during a March broadcast, citing political problems.

The lawyers gave Tinubu seven days to explain how the appointed administrator gained the power to name local officials. They filed their case against multiple defendants, including the Senate President. Their lawsuit aims to highlight legal issues with suspending democratic governance in a member state. ALDRAP believes these actions clearly violated Article 1 of the ECOWAS Protocol.

The group previously wrote to regional heads of government demanding similar treatment as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger received. They warn that failure to act would prove ECOWAS uses double standards as a chair who punished other nations. The lawyers claim the crisis was simply a fight between the governor and his predecessor, who supports Tinubu. They suggest the president either misunderstood or misled everyone about the situation.
