Lawyers skip Chimombe sentencing

Lawyers for Zanu PF members Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu failed to appear in court for pre-sentencing proceedings despite a judicial warning, prompting a postponement until later this month. Lovemore Madhuku, Ashiel Mugiya, and Tapson Dzvetero sent a substitute attorney claiming other commitments, after previously attempting to delay the case by seeking Supreme Court intervention to obtain a written judgment from Justice Pisirayi Kwenda.

The convicted pair awaits sentencing following their fraud conviction related to a botched government goat supply tender valued at $7.7 million. Chimombe and Mpofu were found guilty of submitting falsified tax and social security documents to win a contract for delivering 500,000 goats to the Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development ministry under a Presidential Empowerment Scheme. The scheme involved a nonexistent company called Blackdeck Livestock & Poultry, which failed to fulfill its obligations after securing the tender through misrepresentation.
