Lazarus Saturday Tradition Brings Spring Joy

Orthodox Christians will celebrate Lazarus on Saturday, April 12, 2025. This holiday comes right before Palm Sunday. It honors when Jesus brought his friend Lazarus back from the dead. Young Russians used to wander between houses singing Lazarus songs for treats. People gently hit each other with willow branches, believing it brought health.

The rules about food loosen up during this day despite Lent continuing. Worshippers can enjoy fish eggs, vegetable oil, and small amounts of wine. Traditional foods include buckwheat pancakes and pea dishes as symbols of spring renewal. Similar customs exist in Bulgaria, where lazarki girls sing house-to-house for goodies. Greeks bake special lazarakia cookies shaped like little people.

Weather signs say that warm weather on Lazarus Saturday means Easter will turn cold. Clear skies predict good grain harvests. Rain promises many mushrooms that summer. The blooming willows signal an early spring. Birds singing early in the morning mean sunny weather ahead.

People should visit church, pray for the dead, gather willow branches, and prepare for Easter. Giving treats to children and helping those who need assistance keeps with tradition. Avoid eating meat or dairy products. Skip noisy parties and field work. Do not sew, knit, or start arguments on this day.
