Lazy Lawmakers Drag on N106 Billion Budget

Martin Lukato wants parliament to give him two weeks. The National Democratic Party leader needs time to check the new budget carefully. After looking at all the details, he plans to make a smart choice. Lukato believes Namibians should receive what they deserve from this financial plan.

He shared his thoughts after Finance Minister Ericah Shafudah presented the national spending plan on Thursday. The new N$106.3-billion budget for 2025/26 costs N$6.2 billion more than last year. The previous budget totaled N$100.1 billion, according to Shafudah, who heads finance and social grants management.

Job Amupanda also asked for the budget papers. The Affirmative Repositioning leader wants to read everything before Tuesday arrives. National Assembly Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila pushed back against any slow progress. She warned that delays might hurt regular people if money takes longer to reach important services.

Parliament members agreed to push the budget talk to Tuesday. This gives leaders like Lukato and Amupanda a chance to review the numbers. The postponement falls short of the two weeks Lukato requested. Everyone waits to see what happens when they meet again next week.
