Leadway powers agri-insurance push, partners tackle climate risks

Leadway Assurance teamed up with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, the National Agricultural Development Fund, and Verdure Climate to push agricultural insurance and climate risk solutions in Nigeria. The high-level forum focused on ways to boost lending to farmers through index-based insurance and blended finance, with Ayoola Fatona from Leadway saying the company wants to turn insurance into a productivity tool that helps farmers get credit and bounce back from weather disasters. The project targets Niger, Kaduna, and Nasarawa States.

Over 82 percent of Nigerian farmers have zero insurance coverage, and climate chaos could cut agricultural output by 10 to 25 percent by 2080. Leadway has been expanding coverage for smallholder farmers and pushing public-private partnerships to stabilize the agribusiness sector. The forum brought together policymakers, financiers, and agriculture experts to figure out how to protect food systems from getting wrecked by climate shocks.
