M23 Rebels Demand Direct Talks to End Congo War

Rebels Want to Talk Peace with Congo Leaders.

The M23 rebels sent an important letter saying they wanted to talk with Congo's leaders about peace. They wrote this message right before important African leaders met in Tanzania to discuss the fighting in Congo.

The rebels recently captured a big city called Goma and its airport after fighting with Congo's army. This made many people worried about the growing violence in the country.

The leaders from different African countries asked everyone to stop fighting. They want the armies to let people bring food and supplies to those who need help. They asked soldiers to open the roads between important cities and let boats travel on Lake Kivu.

Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo leads a group connected to the rebels. He thinks Congo needs special peace talks because the fighting has lasted more than 30 years. He believes President Félix Tshisekedi makes things worse by working with people who hurt others in Rwanda many years ago.

The fighting continued even after the African leaders asked for peace. On Saturday night, people heard loud battles near Bushaku. Everyone hopes the rebels and the army will listen to what the African leaders say and stop hurting each other.
