Machakos Hit by Massive Theft of 200 Electricity Meters

Someone stole 200 electricity meters from important places in Machakos County. These meters helped run schools, hospitals, and other buildings that people need. Mr. Simon Kirima, who works for the energy office, went around checking meters after many people said they were missing.

During his search, Mr. Kirima found two of the county's stolen meters at someone's house. The county had paid a lot of money for these meters, about 1.6 million shillings. This made him very worried because the county was losing money it could use to help people.

Mr. Newton Musyoka from the energy office told anyone who has these stolen meters to bring them back. They can take them to the police station or energy office within seven days. Kenya Power Company wants to help find all the missing meters. Mr. Kirima said anyone caught with stolen meters would face big trouble and have to go to court.

Taking electricity without paying hurts everyone. People who steal electricity make others pay more money, making things unfair for businesses. It also puts people's lives at risk because wrong connections can start fires or break people's machines at home.

The law says anyone who steals or breaks electricity equipment must pay five million shillings or go to jail for five years. They might face both punishments. If someone uses a car to move stolen electrical things, the government will take their car away. People who make wrong electricity connections must pay one million shillings or stay in jail for one year. The wrong connections will be cut off right away.
