Mafube residents suffer as pay delays, service failures grow

The Mafube Local Municipality faces severe service delivery failures and financial instability, prompting protests from municipal workers over unpaid October salaries. Residents in towns like Frankfort and Villiers have endured weeks without reliable water due to broken infrastructure and a non-functional water tanker. The Democratic Alliance is advocating for public-private partnerships to address the collapsed water, sewage, and road maintenance services, which it attributes to years of financial neglect.

Acting Municipal Manager Jamela Selapyane expressed regret for the salary delays but provided no definite payment date. The municipality's financial troubles are longstanding, including a recent attachment of its accounts by the South African Revenue Service over unpaid taxes. The Democratic Alliance has escalated its concerns to provincial and national government levels, criticizing the council's repeated rejection of partnership offers that could have provided operational support.
