Mafume’s political path could reshape Zimbabwe’s future

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume’s political strategy of cooperating with the national government has positioned him as a potential figure in a new political realignment. He has defended his approach by stating that his primary objective is to improve municipal services for residents, which requires collaboration with central government projects. This pragmatic stance, however, has led to criticism from within opposition circles, where some accuse him of aligning with the ruling party.

Mafume’s philosophy centers on using public office to deliver tangible benefits, a shift from the traditionally confrontational opposition politics. This occurs amid a broader stagnation within the main opposition, following Nelson Chamisa’s departure. The current political climate, with its diminished prospects for electoral change, has sparked discussions about the necessity for a new governance model, potentially including a form of inclusive government.

Concurrently, an alliance of various opposition and civil society figures has announced a new initiative, which some observers interpret as an attempt to revive a traditional opposition movement. However, questions remain about whether such a coalition can effectively address the current political realities.
