Mahfuj Alam vows Journalist Act or bust in Dhaka

Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam announced plans to enact the Journalist Protection Act within two to three months during a media discussion hosted by the Centre for Governance Studies on Sunday. The government adviser expressed uncertainty about completing the Notun Kuri competition and suggested political parties may interfere with the program. Alam revealed job insecurity concerns while discussing his position within the administration. He proposed combining BTV and Bangladesh Betar into one autonomous organization but encountered staff coordination challenges.

The adviser confirmed no media outlets closed during his service and stated his ministry works to address journalist harassment issues. Kamal Ahmed recommended publishing drafts of journalist protection legislation online for public review. Professor SM Shameem Reza urged political parties to include journalist safety provisions in election platforms. Several political representatives attended the event focused on media reform initiatives.
