Malawi Election Nomination Deadline Hits July Crunch

Malawi's election officials have pushed back the deadline for candidates to submit their nomination papers. The new dates run from July 24 to July 30, 2025. Justice Annabel Mtalimanja leads the Malawi Electoral Commission and announced the change during a Wednesday press conference in Lilongwe. The original deadline was June 22 for local races and July 5 for parliamentary contests. Officials made this change to match when the national assembly dissolves on July 23.

Voting will happen on September 16, 2025, with polls open from 6 AM to 4 PM. People standing in line at 4 PM can still vote, but anyone who arrives after that time cannot cast a ballot. Campaigning starts July 14 and stops at 6 AM on September 14, just two days before the election. All campaign activities must follow peaceful conduct rules. The commission wants candidates to check their papers before turning them in to avoid mistakes.

The final candidate list will appear in the Government Gazette, newspapers, and radio broadcasts on August 8, 2025. Voters will choose a president, parliament members, and local council representatives. The commission stressed that all aspiring candidates should review their nomination forms carefully before submission.
