Malawi Passport Pause Sends Citizens Into Frenzy

CDEDI wrote to Homeland Security Minister Ezekiel Ching'oma about passport problems. The group wants answers about why passport offices stopped working two weeks ago. Director Sylvester Namiwa said the Immigration Department broke its legal duties to citizens. He pointed out that the minister promised a new passport company would fix the crisis. CDEDI used the Access to Information Act to force government honesty.

Namiwa asked three main questions about the passport mess. He wants to know why passports stopped being made. The director demands a date when passport services will start again. He also wants details about how officials picked the new passport supplier.

The government gave a contract to Madras Security Printers Private Limited from India. The old contract with E-Tech ran out and needed replacement. Officials signed a five-year deal worth $29.97 million with the Indian company. The new supplier should make passport security better and produce 2,000 biometric passports each day.
