Quiet US Cardinal Sends Vatican into Frenzy

The Church picked American Cardinal Robert Prevost as its new leader Thursday. He chose the name Leo XIV after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney. He greeted crowds in Italian and Spanish but not English. He comes from Chicago but spent most of his life working in Peru.

President Trump quickly sent happy wishes about the first US pope, Prevost. Prevost took over after Pope Francis died last month. Francis ran the Church for 12 years and tried to make it more modern. The new pope thanked Francis and promised to keep helping people who suffer.

Some Church leaders wanted to keep moving forward with changes, while others hoped to return to older ways. Prevost wore traditional red clothes over his white outfit. The last Pope, Leo, focused on social justice and created much of modern Catholic teaching. Prevost became noticed because he stayed quiet but supported helping poor people.
