Malawi urged to stay vigilant on polio-free status

The Malawi Health Equity Network urged authorities to protect the nation's polio-free status following the 2022 outbreak, which was contained. The health advocacy group praised government officials and partners for their rapid response to the wild poliovirus case that threatened the country's status.

The organization warned that constant monitoring remains necessary despite successful containment efforts. More than 100 civil society groups under the network work to expand access to affordable healthcare across Malawi.

The alliance requested greater government spending on immunization programs and disease tracking systems. Officials must strengthen public outreach and improve data management to ensure every child receives the required vaccinations.

The network's leader said eliminating polio protects children's health rights and advances equality. Stakeholders must collaborate to prevent future cases and eliminate the disease permanently from the region.
