Man held for impersonating a student in the UNEB exam

Police in Mubende District arrested Leonard Elungat, 36, on suspicion of impersonation in the Uganda National Examinations Board exams, authorities said. The former Mubende Army Senior Secondary School student was found on Tuesday sitting the UCE Agriculture Paper One with another candidate’s index number. Officials said he posed as Justus Atuhaire, a registered student at the school who had not signed up for Agriculture and was absent.

Investigators said Elungat had already written seven papers under Atuhaire’s name before detection. The head teacher intercepted him and referred him to the deputy head teacher for questioning, but he fled and was picked up on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Mubende town. He is held at Mubende Central Police Station and faces charges of impersonation and forgery, police said. UNEB has warned that exam malpractice will be prosecuted under the UNEB Act of 2021, which carries penalties of up to five years in prison or fines for offenders, and applies to school administrators as well.
