Man jailed for 25 years after 2011 double murder

A Bulawayo resident received a 25-year prison term for killing two men in a 2011 Christmas attack after evading capture in South Africa for more than 12 years. Joseph Vusumuzi Moyo, 39, stabbed Smart Mpofu, 40, and Jabulani Mpofu, 25, near Sikhobokhobo in Nkayi on December 25, 2011. The victims died within two days from their wounds.

Justice Bongani Ndlovu convicted Moyo on both murder charges at Hwange High Court last week. The attack occurred around 10 p.m. when Moyo and three others ambushed the victims returning from holiday celebrations. Both men suffered multiple stab wounds, with one blade fragment remaining lodged in Smart Mpofu's jaw.

Moyo fled to South Africa after the killings and remained there until police arrested him upon his return on July 23, 2024. The judge rejected claims of mistaken identity, citing witness accounts and physical evidence. Authorities denied Moyo's appeal request, concluding a case that had affected the Nkayi area for over a decade.
