Mayor Lowe Accused of D3 Million Cash Grab

Former money chief at Banjul City Council says Mayor Rohey Lowe broke rules when she ended the city project team without asking others first. Momodou Camara told a government group Monday that the mayor acted alone in 2021 after he refused to sign a D900000 check for activities he thought seemed wrong. The team managed D3 million meant for city growth plans through money from outside sources. Camara admitted members took over D300000 as loans during holidays, which never came back to the council after the mayor disbanded their group.

The lawyer, Patrick Gomez, pointed out that skilled workers did not help choose who served on committees. He claimed this showed poor leadership throughout the system. Most contracts went to single companies instead of being awarded through proper bidding as required by law. Camara agreed that these actions failed to follow good business practices. The investigation continues with more people set to speak about how city money was spent.
