Mbare vendors ditch fees as garbage piles up

Market sellers in Mbare have stopped paying their fees because trash piles up everywhere. The garbage hasn't been picked up at the Vegetable Wholesale Market for four months straight. Ward 3 leader Simbarashe Chanachimwe brought this problem up during last week's city meeting and described how bad the situation has become.

Rotten trash fills the market space. People must wear rubber boots just to walk around inside the area. Chanachimwe believes that only daily trash pickup can fix the market's damaged reputation. He warned city officials that new illegal dump areas keep popping up throughout Mbare.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume asked for specific locations where problems exist and promised better service would come soon. He also spoke about making regular pickup a priority again and stressed the importance of taking all waste to proper disposal sites instead of letting it pile up near businesses.
