MCP Primaries Slap Down Ex-DPP Stars

Former Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje lost her bid for the Malawi Congress Party nomination. She received just 53 votes during Monday's primary election for Nsanje North. Current MP Enock Chizuzu won with 798 votes and Rose Makiyi came second with 415 votes. Chilenje switched from the Democratic Progressive Party to MCP before the election. Her defeat means she cannot run for parliament unless she chooses to go independent.

Many politicians who left opposition parties for MCP have struggled in primary races. The party's longtime members appear unwilling to support newcomers over established candidates. Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule also lost her primary after joining MCP. Former First Lady Callista Mutharika and veteran politician Ken Msonda faced similar defeats. Former DPP governor Zeria Chakale rounds out the list of defectors who failed to win nominations.

MCP leaders have not commented on the primary results. The pattern shows party members prefer familiar faces over recent arrivals. Grassroots voters seem resistant to candidates who recently changed parties. The losses suggest MCP members value loyalty over bringing in new political talent. These results could reshape the party's candidate lineup for upcoming elections.
