MEC Shoots Down Smartmatic Rumors Before Vote

The Malawi Electoral Commission says the Smartmatic systems for next September's elections work fine. At a Catholic University talk about election tech, MEC legal manager Lawrence Lunguzi claimed their device has no problems seen elsewhere. He said Malawi asked for a special custom model that meets their needs.

Law teacher Burton Mhango backed these claims but worried about courts handling tech cases. He thinks Malawi needs a better tech setup first. Many civil groups want MEC to drop Smartmatic because of its bad record around the world. These groups fear the system might harm trust in elections.

The Catholic University talks bring experts together to discuss things that matter to the country. Election technology was the main topic this time. Civil groups think using Smartmatic raises questions about honest elections. They worry people might not trust the results.
