Mehbooba Mufti flags Kulgam self-immolation case

People's Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti has warned authorities against excessive measures while investigating a terror network, pointing to an incident where a Qazigund resident attempted self-immolation after police detained his two sons. Bilal Wani sustained critical burns and was transferred to a Srinagar medical facility after officials refused his request to see the detained family members. Mufti expressed concern that arbitrary detentions could push young people toward extremism and urged police to permit the distraught father to contact his relatives.

The detentions follow investigations into a vehicle explosion near Red Fort that killed 12 people, including the driver, identified as Dr Umar Nabi. Authorities have arrested multiple suspects linked to what they describe as a professional terror network, including medical practitioners from Kulgam district. Police recovered weapons and explosive materials from various locations and are seeking international cooperation to apprehend additional suspects who fled abroad.
