Microsoft layoffs axe major games, but Kojima's OD with Jordan Peele survives

Microsoft terminated over 9,000 employees company-wide, resulting in multiple project cancellations. ZeniMax Online's upcoming MMO, the Perfect Dark reboot, Rare's Everwild, and Avalanche Studios' Contraband all received termination notices. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed that Hideo Kojima's horror collaboration with Xbox, known as OD, continues active development. A Microsoft representative assured the public that this particular project remains unaffected by recent cuts.

The Game Awards 2023 showcased OD's initial reveal, generating substantial industry attention. Kojima characterizes the horror title as risky and divisive, targeting unprecedented player experiences. Director Jordan Peele partners with Kojima and Xbox on this venture, though specific details remain limited. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach recently arrived in retail stores. Industry analysts expect additional OD announcements following this recent release.
