Middle East's New Era Myth Gets Shattered Once Again

Political expert Francis Fukuyama once claimed history had ended after the Soviet Union fell apart. He thought liberal democracy and capitalism had won forever. Russia took twenty years to rebuild and fight wars against Georgia and Ukraine. China also grew stronger during this time. Democracy started falling back around the world.

People keep saying a new Middle East will emerge after every war. This happens because Iran lost power in Syria, Lebanon and Gaza after fighting Israel. Leaders have made these same claims for a hundred years. Each military fight just creates the seeds for the next battle.

Israel beat three Arab armies in 1967 and took over huge areas of land. This victory actually created its biggest long-term enemy when Palestinians took control of their liberation movement. Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982 and reached Beirut quickly. That military success led to Hezbollah forming and threatening Israel for forty years.

Israeli leaders worked against Arab Spring democracy movements because they feared public opinion. Egyptian people hate their peace deal with Israel. Israel helped legitimize the military coup that brought Sisi to power in 2013. Saudi Arabia almost joined peace agreements with Israel before October 2023 attacks happened.

The recent Israel-Iran war showed both countries have strong military abilities but also weaknesses. Arab nations proved they cannot defend themselves without American help. Iran will try rebuilding influence across the region. Israel wants to force Palestinians out of Gaza and the West Bank. Arab countries need to create their vision for the Middle East instead of following outside powers.
