Mike Tyson returns to Congo to honor roots

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson traveled to Kinshasa, where thousands welcomed him at ceremonies honoring his African ancestry. The 59-year-old boxer received traditional gifts and clothing from local officials who celebrated his decision to explore his family history in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The visit occurred nearly 50 years after the capital hosted the famous 1974 bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Tyson met with researchers who traced his lineage to central Africa and toured communities to learn about regional customs.

The boxer told crowds he wanted to honor his ancestors and understand their experiences. Officials suggested the trip might lead to cultural programs connecting the nation with African Americans seeking heritage ties.

Observers noted the homecoming provided unity for a country affected by historical conflicts. Tyson has transformed from a controversial athlete into an advocate for personal growth and spiritual awareness.
