Minerals Commission CEO proposes changes to mining law

Ghana's mining sector could see major changes after the head of the Minerals Commission pushed for new laws. Martin Kwaku Ayisi wants to update the old 2006 mining rules during talks with government planning experts on Thursday. The meeting brought together top mining officials and the National Development Planning Commission to discuss better ways to manage the country's minerals. William Ntow Boahene and other senior staff joined Ayisi for the important discussion. Professor Jerry Samuel Yaw Kuma and Victoria Awuni also attended the session.

The planning commission team welcomed the mining officials and shared helpful ideas about improving the policy review process. Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah led her technical staff and suggested the mining rules should match national development standards. They recommended adding a strategic plan and monitoring system to track progress and make future changes easier. The planning experts want to ensure the new mining policies work well with other government programs. Benjamin Aryee from the review committee listened to all the suggestions.

Ayisi agreed with the planning commission's ideas and asked them to send written proposals within two weeks. The review committee will study these recommendations before making final decisions about the mining law changes. The 2014 Mining Policy review continues as officials work to create better rules for Ghana's mining industry.
