Minister calls for Zimbabweans to tell their own story

Information Minister Jenfan Muswere urged Zimbabweans to tell their country's story from local perspectives to strengthen national identity and revive the film industry. He addressed graduates at the Zimbabwe Film and Television School of Southern Africa ceremony in Harare on Friday, emphasizing that authentic storytelling would ensure media sovereignty and economic growth.

The government is mobilizing funds for the Zimbabwe Film School and establishing a Content Creators Association to promote heritage-based production aligned with Vision 2030 goals. Muswere said amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act and the Freedom of Information Act will improve infrastructure. He challenged graduates to document national transformation across agriculture, mining and governance sectors.

The minister questioned whether filmmakers would support development or undermine the nation's dignity. He encouraged graduates to adopt entrepreneurial approaches similar to successful film industries in Nigeria, India and the United States. Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation chief Sugar Chagonda and Zimbabwe Newspapers acting head William Chikoto attended the event with other media stakeholders.
