Minister Katumba Wamala Reopens Karuma Bridge Ahead of Holidays

Karuma Bridge is open again. It was closed for three months while workers fixed the bridge and the road.

The state minister for works, Musa Ecweru, opened the bridge on Friday, December 20th, 2024.

The minister of works and transport made an announcement. Gen. Katumba Wamala spoke to Parliament on Thursday. He said the Karuma Bridge would open by 6:00 a.m. on Friday. Small vehicles and buses can use the bridge, but big trucks have to wait a bit longer.

"I am happy to share good news," he said. "I promised Karuma Bridge would open before Christmas. People can travel that way again. The bridge will open at 6 am tomorrow. Buses and small vehicles can cross. We are still fixing things for big trucks. Please be patient with us."

The deputy speaker had asked for an update, wanting to know how the repairs were going. That is when Katumba made his announcement.

Karuma Bridge first closed in April and closed again on September 23, 2024. Minister Katumba Wamala had looked at the road and found problems with important parts of the bridge. The bearings and expansion joints were worn out and cracked.

Two groups, China Railway Seventh Group and National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), worked on fixing the bridge. Their hard work means people can use it again.
