Misheck Sibanda named NRZ chairman in Bulawayo after Madiro's exit

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has selected Misheck Sibanda to lead the National Railways of Zimbabwe as chairman. Sibanda previously served as chief secretary under both Mnangagwa and the late Robert Mugabe before retiring from government service. Mike Madiro held the position for two years after his September 2023 appointment. The new chairman interrupted writing his memoirs to accept this assignment. Sibanda announced his commitment to unite the workforce around common goals during his Thursday introduction at Bulawayo headquarters.

Zimbabwe's railway system faces significant challenges with outdated infrastructure and mounting financial obligations. The government transferred NRZ oversight to the Mutapa Investment Fund to improve management and attract investment capital. Officials continue negotiations with China Railway Group regarding a substantial modernization package worth 600 million dollars. This potential agreement represents the largest investment opportunity for the parastatal in recent decades. Sibanda brings extensive administrative experience to address these complex operational issues.
