Mnangagwa clips Chiwenga, Mpofu dumped Harare

President Emmerson Mnangagwa reshuffled Zanu PF leadership positions on Tuesday by removing Obert Mpofu from secretary general duties. The veteran politician received a reassignment to the Information Communication Technology secretary after years of supporting Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. Jacob Mudenda assumes the position of secretary general, while Patrick Chinamasa takes control of party treasury operations. Ziyambi Ziyambi fills the legal secretary vacancy.

Analysts view these changes as Mnangagwa's attempt to reduce Chiwenga's political influence ahead of the Mutare conference. The president seeks constitutional amendments extending his presidency until 2030 despite Chiwenga's opposition to such proposals. Mnangagwa reportedly prefers petroleum executive Kudakwashe Tagwirei as his eventual replacement. The former general retains military connections from the 2017 coup that removed Robert Mugabe from power.
