Mnangagwa declares Glen View fire a disaster, orders reconstruction

President Mnangagwa designated the Glen View Area 8 Complex fire as a state disaster following Sunday morning flames that damaged the furniture manufacturing center. The blaze destroyed 25 percent of the facility and affected 700 traders who suffered losses between two and three million dollars. Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe announced that reconstruction would begin in September through a Build Operate Transfer partnership with private investors. The project targets completion by April next year with modern infrastructure featuring proper fire safety systems, water networks, and organized layouts.

Government plans simultaneous reconstruction of both Glen View and Mbare Market facilities under Vision 2030 development goals. The new complex design will replace single large roof structures with multiple buildings that meet safety standards and provide dignified working conditions. Women Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa emphasized that small and medium enterprises contribute over 60 percent of national GDP through 5.6 million registered businesses. Harare officials committed to creating safer trading environments that protect informal sector livelihoods from preventable disasters.
