Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa has returned to Harare from Windhoek after attending both Namibia's 35th Independence Day celebration and the swearing-in ceremony for their new leader. As chairperson of the Southern African Development Community, Mnangagwa received a formal send-off at Hosea Kutako International Airport. Those present included Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe's Ambassador to Namibia Melody Chaurura, plus staff from the embassy and officials representing the Namibian government.
Earlier today, Namibia made history when President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah took her oath of office at the State House, becoming the first woman to lead the nation. She ran as the candidate for the South West Africa People's Organization during November's election. Her impressive 57.31 percent share of votes helped her defeat fourteen other candidates who wanted the presidency.
Nandi-Ndaitwah replaces President Nangolo Mbumba, who stepped up temporarily following President Hage Geingob's death last February. Mbumba served approximately one year in this caretaker role before handing power to the newly elected leader. The country celebrated this peaceful transition alongside its independence anniversary.
