Mnangagwa Gets Nostalgic Over Lungu Loss

President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed the condolence book at Zambian Embassy Thursday after former Zambian leader Edgar Chagwa Lungu died. Mnangagwa remembered studying law together at University of Zambia during the 1970s when both men were students. The Zimbabwe president called Lungu his college mate and junior classmate from their university days. Their friendship extended far beyond political careers and started decades before either man led their countries. Many regional leaders shared similar educational backgrounds at Zambian universities during that period.

Mnangagwa praised Lungu for wanting unity across Southern African Development Community nations. The deceased leader worked hard to bring SADC countries closer together through economic cooperation and shared development goals. Lungu served as Zambia sixth president from 2015 until 2021 when he left office. Mnangagwa said they collaborated well on regional projects that helped both Zimbabwe and Zambia. The former Zambian president believed strongly that African countries should work together rather than compete.

Zambian officials have not announced burial plans for their former leader after his recent death. Embassy staff expect many regional heads of state to attend funeral services when families decide on arrangements. Lungu family members will likely choose between private ceremonies or large public events to honor his legacy. Zimbabwe government plans to send official representatives to pay respects regardless of funeral format. African leaders often attend each other funerals to show continental solidarity and respect.
