Modi calls for a global AI compact with human oversight

Narendra Modi urged G20 nations to establish an international framework for artificial intelligence governance grounded in transparent operations, human supervision, safety-focused design and safeguards against exploitation. India's leader stressed that machine learning systems should augment rather than replace human judgment while prioritizing people over profits and favoring accessible platforms instead of proprietary technologies.

The prime minister detailed his country's strategy centered on universal access, widespread training programs and ethical implementation through the India-AI Mission's computing infrastructure expansion. He announced that New Delhi will host an impact summit on the technology in February 2026 and proposed creating unified standards for cross-border talent movement.

Modi highlighted India's advances in satellite applications, algorithmic systems and electronic transactions while advocating for workforce development that emphasizes future competencies rather than current job requirements. He concluded by affirming his nation's commitment to sustainable development, reliable commerce, equitable financing and shared prosperity.
